Yes, as you said. They explain it on one of the extra features. They'd fight for a minute or so and then the whistle blows and the front line goes back to rest and get some water and it takes another 5 or 6 minutes until they're at the head of the line again- lets them stay fresh.

I didn`t clearly understand the tactic of the roman troops during the battle of Alesia!! The soldiers fighting in the first line seem to retreat through the formation to the backline. Was it to spare the energies of the warriors..so that they could rest for a short time in the back, while the next line goes into battle?? Or did they remove their slightly wounded from the front line that way?? Does anybody know the answer??

Rome is pretty sweet, but becoming emperor was like a death sentence, out of all of the emperors, only like 5 or 6 weren't murdered.

I recently finished watching season 01 - amazing show!!^^ Although I think that they made a little too much social interaction btw. the characters (which makes it "soap-like" sometimes) and a little too less battle scenes. That`s probably because they didn`t have the money to do so. Also personally I think that they were too fast in jumping btw. times and places. One Episode Cesar, Veronus and Pullo arrive in Egypt, the next Cesarion is born.
