Yeah it's probably the synth. That particular model had serious sampler compatability issues and was eventually recalled.

Roddy started singing too early. Check out the keyboard player. He had to cut the xylophone sounding keyboard intro short at the beginning of the song.

Great song, great songwriter, great guitarist, but what is that awful noise that obscures most of the guitar solo? More synth problems? It sounds like random noise or snare hits stuck in a delay line or sampler, from 3:46 to 4:17.It looks like it spooks Roddy when it first comes in, and his solo sort of degenerates.
